WHAT IT IS

The Drug Profile Viewer (DPV) provides authorized health care professionals across the province with secure, real time history of drug products dispensed under the Ontario Drug Benefit (ODB) program and the Trillium Drug Program (TDP) subject to client consent directives.

The DPV system is maintained and operated by eHealth Ontario under the direction of the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (MOHLTC) and is available 24 hours a day seven days a week.

As part of the government’s provincial strategy to improve patient care, safety and access, eHealth Ontario is working with the MOHLTC to explore ways to effectively bring prescription drug information to health care providers throughout the health care sector; using point of care solutions such as regional or hospital portals, and electronic medical records (EMRs).

WHO USES IT

Since 2005, health care providers throughout Ontario hospitals have been successfully using the DPV system in emergency departments, pharmacy, admitting, clinics and beyond. Due to its recognized value, in 2011 DPV access was expanded to a small number of Community Health Centres (CHC). Lessons learned from this and other initiatives continue to inform provincial plans.
